Small Bathroom Tile Project

For this project, the basement bathroom had peal-and-stick resilient floor tiles already on the floor. After this material was removed, the toilet was temporarily removed. A liquid leveling compound was used to level the floor. Previously, a bathtub sat where the shower is now. The homeowner and a plumber removed the tub, installed the plastic shower pan, and the mixer valve.

The homeowner asked that a shower stall be built where the tub used to sit. The shower stall features a 12" bench seat on one end a and soap dish beside the mixer valve. After framing the shower stall, the walls were covered with 1/2" cement board and the ceiling was covered with 11/2" green board. A combination light/fan fixture was installed in the ceiling of the shower stall, and an exhaust duct with exit port was installed through the rim joist. A dual light/timer switch to control the exhaust fan was installed. The accoustic tile drop ceiling was temporarily removed, a new light fixture installed, and then the drop ceiling was reinstalled.

The shower stall was tiled with white 4" tiles with 1/8" spacers. A customer supplied frameless glass sliding shower door was installed and caulked in.

The concrete floor was covered with 12" white tile with 3/16" spaces. Metal transition strips were used in the two doorways accessing the bathroom. White grout was applied to both the shower walls and the floor. The toilet was reinstalled. After the grout had cured, a grout sealer was applied.
